PCIe 4.0 vs PCIe 5.0 SSDs
What really changes between Gen4 and Gen5 NVMe — and whether PCIe 5.0 is worth paying for.
Short answer. For gaming and general use, a good PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is the smart buy: it's fast, cooler and cheaper. PCIe 5.0 roughly doubles the interface's peak bandwidth and helps with sustained large transfers and prosumer workloads — but only if your motherboard has a Gen5 M.2 slot and proper cooling. Game load times barely differ between the two for most people today.
The technical difference
The PCIe generation sets the interface ceiling — the maximum bandwidth between the drive and the system over its four lanes (x4):
- PCIe 4.0 x4 — a theoretical interface limit of roughly 8 GB/s.
- PCIe 5.0 x4 — a theoretical interface limit of roughly 16 GB/s.
These are interface ceilings, not the speed any specific drive reaches. Real throughput depends on the controller, NAND, drive cache and thermals, and random (4K) performance — which dominates everyday responsiveness — is far closer between the two generations than the peak sequential numbers suggest. When PCIe 5.0 is worth it
- Sustained large sequential transfers — moving multi-GB files, large backups, or scratch disks for heavy media work.
- Prosumer / workstation workloads: 4K/8K video editing, large datasets, frequent big read/write batches.
- You already have a current platform with a spare Gen5 M.2 slot and cooling, and want maximum headroom for the future.
When PCIe 4.0 makes more sense
- Gaming and everyday computing: load times and app launches are largely unchanged versus Gen5 for typical use.
- Value: PCIe 4.0 2TB drives generally cost less per GB and run cooler.
- Older or mid-range motherboards without a Gen5 M.2 slot — a Gen5 drive there only runs at Gen4 speeds anyway.
Gaming vs workstation
Gaming. Game install sizes are huge, so 2TB capacity matters, but the PCIe generation rarely changes load times noticeably today — a quality PCIe 4.0 drive is plenty. (Technologies like DirectStorage may widen the gap over time, but it isn't a strong reason to pay the Gen5 premium now.)
Workstation. If you routinely move large files or run write-heavy pipelines, PCIe 5.0's higher sustained ceiling — paired with good cooling and a high-endurance drive — is where the extra cost can pay off.
Heat & thermal throttling
PCIe 5.0 controllers draw more power and run hotter, so Gen5 drives are more likely to thermally throttle without adequate cooling. Many Gen5 drives either ship with a heatsink or expect your motherboard's M.2 heatsink. PCIe 4.0 drives are generally comfortable with basic cooling. Treat any "it always throttles" or "it never throttles" claim with caution — it depends on the specific drive, case airflow and workload.
Motherboard & compatibility
- Slot generation. You need a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot (and the CPU/chipset lanes to feed it) to get Gen5 speeds. Check your motherboard manual for which M.2 slot is Gen5.
- Backward compatible. NVMe is backward and forward compatible: a PCIe 5.0 drive works in a PCIe 4.0 slot at Gen4 speeds, and a PCIe 4.0 drive works in a Gen5 slot at Gen4 speeds.
- Lane sharing. On some boards, populating a fast M.2 slot can disable or slow other slots — confirm in the manual.
Laptops & small builds
In laptops and compact builds, power draw and heat are bigger constraints. Many laptops are Gen4 only, and a Gen5 drive there gives no speed benefit while potentially using more power. If you're upgrading a laptop, confirm the supported generation and physical size (most use M.2 2280) before buying.
Price vs performance
PCIe 5.0 drives command a premium for peak numbers most users won't notice in daily use. For the majority of gamers and general users, a well-priced PCIe 4.0 2TB drive is the better value; PCIe 5.0 is a deliberate choice for sustained-throughput workloads. Either way, the price you pay matters as much as the spec — that's what PC Part Scan tracks, so a real drop stands out from a fake discount.
